Belfast Marine Institute is organizing 2026 World Oceans Day along the waterfront, May 20
The Belfast Marine Institute at Belfast Area High School will be organizing this year's World Oceans Day, scheduled for May 20, along the Belfast waterfront. Over the last few years, WOD has involved high school and grade school students exploring marine-related science, engineering, commercial and career possibilities.
This year on Wednesday, May 20, the BMI will be hosting the annual event and plans to expand this open to the public celebration to include public as well as students from THMS and district area fifth graders for a wide-ranging career/information fun-fest, according to BMI, in a news release. There will be numerous informational booths, presentations, and demonstrations as well as hands-on activities celebrating our water world, everything from plankton, kelp and lobsters to kayaks, dory sailing and scuba.
BMI is hoping to host a Kelp Chopped food preparation competition as well as a marine career fair.
The day's events will stretch from the Boat House along the waterfront to the Town Landing.
BMI organizers would like to invite any group, club, organization, business, NGO, or government entity involved with the marine world as well as anyone else interested in volunteering and participating to please contact them at BMI@rsu71.org.
